Overview
The Rosenthal-Levy Scholars program offers generous four-year scholarship awards for exceptional undergraduate students interested in studying the great ideas of Jewish and Western civilization and preparing themselves for lives of American civic leadership.
The program is based at the School of Civic Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin and key elements include:
- A generous scholarship—including full tuition for all four years of study and a $7,000 per year living stipend.
- A rigorous academic program in philosophy, history, literature, Jewish civilization, Zionism, political thought, economics, law, and strategy.
- The ability to pursue additional majors, minors, and certificates in any academic department or program at the University of Texas at Austin, one of America’s preeminent research and teaching universities.
- A unique study abroad program in Israel focused on the foundational texts and ideas of the Jewish people, the history of modern Zionism, the political and economic realities of modern Israel, and the strategic future of the Middle East.
- A community of fellow scholars committed to strengthening Jewish and American life through shared learning and campus leadership.
- High-level internships and career mentorship that prepare our scholars for careers in public policy, foreign affairs, law, academia, education, business, journalism, science and technology, and religious and civic leadership.
Program Details
The Rosenthal-Levy Scholars program is for exceptional undergraduates with a deep interest in the study of Jewish and Western civilization; an exceptional academic and extracurricular record; and the character and ambition to develop into American civic leaders in fields such as public policy, foreign affairs, law, journalism, business, academia, classical education, or religious and civic leadership.
Scholarship Award
Rosenthal-Levy Scholars receive:
- Full tuition for all four undergraduate years of study at the University of Texas at Austin.*
- A $7,000 per year living stipend that helps cover the costs of housing and other expenses.
*Note: The exact tuition award will vary for in-state and out-of-state students. It will supplement the merit-based and need-based packages offered directly by the University of Texas at Austin or other third-party scholarship funds, ensuring that every Rosenthal-Levy Scholar’s full tuition is covered with no student loans or debt.
Core Program Requirements
- Matriculation and completion of a major within the School of Civic Leadership.
- Rosenthal-Levy Scholars are permitted and encouraged to pursue a second academic major in any other college or department at the University of Texas at Austin—including history, Jewish studies, business, natural science, engineering, architecture, and other fields of learning.
- Completion of a required cluster of courses offered by the Ackerman Program on Jewish and Western Civilization.
- Completion of at least two semesters of modern Hebrew Language and Literature. (Students who already possess significant Hebrew language capabilities can place out of this requirement.)
- Academic study abroad in Israel (minimum of one academic semester, with a full academic year strongly encouraged)
- Participation in the extracurricular programming of the Tikvah Society for Jewish Thought, a new student-led campus group at the University of Texas.
- Completion of at least one significant summer internship or research program aligned with the mission and aims of the Rosenthal-Levy Scholars program.
